Okay, my team is currently working on a game, but I am kinda doing a little side project. I’m reviving an old game idea we had a little while back and I’m taking a little easier approach. I’m wanting to know if it would be possible to use rpg maker xp to make an mmo. Lets skip the “your in over your head making an mmo” I have already had enough of that. I just want some helpful pushes in the right direction and don’t try to talk me out of it because I intend to follow through. Just let me know if it is possible to use rpgmxp for what I am doing before I get to far into it.
err rpg maker…uses perl i think or ruby…
creating an mmorpg is always doable…
but
#1 you need to know the language that makes rpg maker
#2 if i thinkk ur talking of the same program i am… its horrible program…
There isn’t really anything as simple as rpg maker, but better. In fact, I can’t think of anything as easy as rpg maker. That’s why I am doing it on rpg maker. It’s just a side project.
language is ruby…or perl…errrr damn it
if its perl
if its ruby i have nothing…
thats 'cause they think their so leet and know everything and think all the MMO makers ‘wannabes’ are going to produce something that is going to be made over night competiting against WoW…
My friend was involved /had a friend that made a MMO or somthing, a couple of years ago mind, 2D based…, so i was just on MSN talking about it, for you and he gave me these two links.

MMORPG is just a graphics version of a MUD. Most of the graphics is contained in the client. However the sweet talk is over. Beyond the pretty words are some serious facts.
- you must know a compiled languge or settle on Javas weakness it is slow.
- you must understand protocals forward and backward.
- you need to learn more then you currently know to even begin to understand what you need to learn.
That last part is not a joke or meant to discourage you. I am A+ certified as a technition. I have CISCO training, use to a decent degree at least 4 differnt compiled computer languages and can read/use half a dozen to a dozen interpreted ones. I have done my homework on how to design games having read over 20 books that are directly related to games design and at least twice that many covering related subjects. I have had college courses in Maths, Sciences, Politics, Psycology, History, Socialogy… you name it just about, I majored in engineering. And I would not even begin to think of doing a MMORPG as a self done side project. Give me 4 to 6 people willing to work with me on it exclusivly and I would give hours, days, weeks, months, even a couple of years to such a project. But never would I try it alone.
Justin please take this not as discouragement. But if you are as young as I am begining to think you are then you have plenty of time. Do it right and get an education first.
Thanks for the advice. I was already planning on taking some of that advice before you gave it to me though. I was planning on this being a very long drawn out prosses. I was wanting it to take quite a while so I had something to keep me busy in my free time and I love a chalenge and I couldn’t think of one better. I also love mmorpg’s and it is my life goal to make one. I decided to not do it with rpg maker and I am going to wait a little while to start it. I want to atleast finish the game my team is working on first and then start thinking about it again later. Who knows? Maybe I’ll be able to convince my team to start working on it again. I think it was just giving us all headaches. Next year I start taking classes at devry.
