Running animation: interactive?

A number of Blender versions ago (when there used to be a Games Engine) if I had a Physics simulation going, I was able to pick up objects and drag them around while the physics worked (e.g. timeline was running). This meant that I could have a rag-doll character on a ground plane and then manually shake the ground to make the character collapse.
Now - I can’t seem to do this. It’s just set up and look with no interaction.
…or is there a setting somewhere to allow real-time physics engine while dragging objects?
