Ryzen 9 3900x/ 3800x or i7 10700K?

Hi everyone

I am working as a concept artist in game industry. In general, I use photoshop to draw but I would like to improve my 3D skills as well. For this reason I will buy a new computer. Real time viewport performance will be more important than final render perfromance for me. In this case, which CPU do you recommend ?

Overall, the best performer here is the 3900X. But, it doesn’t go alone in a system. What’s your current rig and how much are you willing to spend in total for the parts you want to upgrade. For Blender the gpu is paramount, and usually for Blender users the gpu choice weighs more than other parts.

Probably, other parts will be ASUS RTX 2070 DUAL EVO, Kingston 16GB (2x8) Fury 3200mhz CL16 RAM, MSI MAG Z490 Tomahawk etc. As far as I researched, Intel cpu’s are better than Ryzen in terms of viewport performance but for render performance Ryzen is better. Is this true? I found this test about viewport scores. https://www.cgdirector.com/cinema-4d-viewport-performance-benchmark-scores/ In this test, cinema 4d is used so can I trust this test for Blender?

Also interestingly 3700x is better than 3800x and 3900x in this test. Because of importance of viewport performance for me I thought that 10700K may be good for me. What do you think?

There are various benchmarks for Single Threaded performance, which heavily affects viewport responsiveness. The 3900X and the 10700K are almost on par in most benchmarks and where one is ahead the difference is marginal. So, in terms of overall performance the 3900X offers a better value. Their price is almost the same. So, it’s up to you to pick what’s best for your needs. They should be identical in STP tasks, but the 3900X would be much faster in multi-threaded workloads.

As for the gpu, it’s not a good time to buy an expensive card right now. The new RTX 3000 Nvidia series is around the corner (release date is said to be in 2 months from now), and it will offer huge (as rumors say) performance boosts in all fields. The 2000 series will suddenly loose its value. Buying a 500$ gpu now is a potential loss of money. In 2-3 months you will be able to buy way better performance with the same price. So, imo, buy a cheaper card now, and upgrade with minimal loss in 3 months from now. Right now, many 2000 users are trying to push their gpus in the used parts market in relatively high prices, n order to minimize their lossed before upgrading. After the new series is released, the 2000 gpus will be much more affordable if you want to buy a 2nd hand card (I’ll most probably wait for a bargain like that myself).

I think both would be a good choice and I agree from what I have seen so far, the Intel’s look like they are still ahead at single core speed. Most important metric for me personally but it’s only single percentages in benchmarks.

For making a purchasing decision I’d also look at how good the mainboards/chipsets are (stability, features, etc), how much RAM you can stuff in there (Ryzen is ahead I think), how hot/power-hungry these CPUs are when running full tilt and if the Ryzen board would be good for a future CPU upgrade in a couple years (I assume Intel is DOA as usual).

As for GPUs it remains yet to be seen if the new models will be much faster or if its just the usual performance boost. Also upper end cards did not lose value last time (I tried to get a new 1080 TI at a not-insane price for years after the RTX was out, sadly wasn’t any cheaper than current models, no Bitcoin craze to blame anymore either. In the end I got the RTX but did not save much money).
