sample as lamp question

Hello Peeps!

Anyone know if its possible to switch off sample as lamp for spot lamps in cycles?

The reason being I have a scene setup which is lit mainly using mesh lighting but with several spot lamps with low values. With these spot lamps in the scene I get a lot of noise even though they are not adding a lot of light to the scene.

Anyone have any ideas?

Question 2 - I could replace the spot lamps with mesh lighting if I could control the light beam spread from the mesh (I don’t want to use a mesh to funnel the light, as this is a very noisy method). Anyone know a node based method to produce a controlled beam of light from a mesh emitter rather than a diffused spread?
