Hi,
I am a newbie and have been following the Blender project and still learning some of the tutorials. I downloaded the newer versions, the latest being 2.30. I have 2.30 and publisher 2.25 on the same computer but in different folders on the same drive. I notice that when I save user defaults in 2.30 or any other versions it does not save it. The new file reads up publisher 2.25 user default settings. If I change 2.25 then the newer versions will use 2.25 default settings.
Has anyone else noticed this? I have tried putting 2.30 on a different drive and still no change. The work around for the moment is to save a file in 2.30 with the UI set to what I want and then load it up as a new file if I want to use those settings.
By the way, I just want to say that I appreciate all the hard work everyone is doing to provide Blender to the world as open source. I love the new 2.30 layout! The UI is wonderful to use and will make Blender easier to learn for a newbie like me. Thank you.
Any ideas on the save user default settings issue?
Ok, here is why:
blender versions 2.26 (I believe) and prior stored the default blend file in the windows directory (I am speaking for windows 98, but the result shoudl be similar in 2k/xp)
starting with 2.27 (again IIRC) the default blend file is stored in the directory you installed blender in (not in 2k/xp probably, but same effect)
those newer versions will load the old one, but if it can’t find it will start with the default.
so, do a search on your computer for .B.blend (filename) and rename it (inside of the find files and folders list). Then start blender 2.30, and update the defaults with control+u. Rename it back (if you can’t start 2.25 and update the defaults with control+u). This will get the new layout in 2.30, in 2.25 it will have it’s own settings.
Hi,
Thank you for the tip. I did get the new default settings with 2.30, however, I still cannot save new settings with control-U in 2.30. I can save the control settings with 2.25 but this puts a .B.blend in my C:/ directory which 2.30 reads up with these settings. When I rename it, I get the 2.30 new default settings and 2.25 goes back to its old default setting (pink square with one screen) I am using Windows 2K. I notice someone else using W2K is having a similar problem.
For now I have deleted the .B.blend file from my see drive as this contains the 2.25 control-U settings that I used. By deleting the .B.blend file in the C:/ directory (which is nothing more than the 2.25 control_U settings) I am left with 2.25 default settings which I can live with and will be able to use the new default 2.30 settings.
Also, I did notice that 2.30 has a .blender folder which contains its own .B.blend file, but this doesn’t seem to want to keep any control-U settings.
Again, thanks for the tip, I can still use the new default settings and maybe someone at Blender.org can figure this out.
