Saving & Transfering Materials

Having at last created a nice rusty texture with stencils and layers, it’s a pain re-doing this for all the other meshes. Is there a way to save out the material and then apply it to other meshes?

Of course! You can select a bunch of objects, select the one with the rusty material LAST, then hover your mouse over the 3D window and press ctrl+L and choose “Materials” from the menu that pops up. That’s the fastest way, but you can also select an object, go into the materials window and click the button to the left of where the material’s name would go, and you will get a list of all the existing materials in your project:

If it’s in a different project entirely, then you can press Shift+F1 to append the material to your other project: in the browser window that opens, find the .blend file with your rusty material. Clicking the blend will give you a a set of folders to choose from – choose the “Material” one, and the material will be in there. Once you’ve loaded it, you will have to assign it to your object using the technique described above.
