Say hello to Volumetric Material! now with blend file.

Phew! Voxel imitation.

Looks pretty good!

Hello Volumetric Material, it’s nice to meet you

Amazing…
HOW did you accomplish that wonderful piece of BlenderPower?!
This thread hereby gains my approval

Incredible, please tell us how you did it!

Thanks all of you! I Added some more examples to top.
Framedworld: I just imitated voxels and played with materials/textures  Im planning to make a short tutorial for this. So keep an eye on this thread!

Okei, those look sweet. I’ve been trying to do similiar things in my school project, but nothing that nice has happened. Looking forward for your tutorial.

I’ve been messing around with this too, but to no avail:D . Please keep developing your technique!

i want that! gimme, gimme, gimme!

Pretty goooooood!!

Wow, did you use tons of planes close together and material IPO’s or is it a new technique?

OFFTOPIC IGNORE
CD is back! Hey man, where have you been?
ONTOPIC
The movie isnt working for me, mind posting a frame grab or something?

About the movie do you have the latest flash player installed?

Um…Im pretty sure I do…
yeah, I do

 So cool. Is it legal?

Hey thanks all of you again
Cyborg Dragon: Yeah, exactly … not tons of planes just 123 faces
Free_ality: Hmm… not sure whats wrong with your flash player but can you see other youtube videos? Im too lazy and busy in this weekend to make a picture and upload it to another pic sharing site but i hope you get youtbube work.

I have lots of interest of this technique and i will develop more of it. Also I have lots of ideas how this techinuqe would develop with few lines of code (i think). Im not a coder but using vector blur with some modifications it would be fantastic effect for having volumetric material without having face kind of artifacts. I will post here my experiements + blend file also; and suggestions of improving blender (mayby someone gets motivation to code some volumetric object type in blender :)). I will get back in to this on monday - wednesday.

Wow, I read about a similar way to achieve volumetric effects, but the planes just didn’t work for me. I surely did something wrong. A tutorial would explain a lot…

Looks great and very realistic!

I thought so, because I’ve actually tried that myself once, Can take a while to render though.

Wait, how does this work?

I think you make a bunch of planes lined up to make a ‘volumetric’. then you set their colour and alpha to a three-dimensional, volumetric procedural texture. Then you assign the texture mapping to an empty, and move the empty through 3d space to make the texture’s 3d co-ordinates change.
