scaling in objectmode / apply scale

Since Blender inserts objects in objectmode, many beginners scale them directly, but this can cause some serious problems. For example unwrapping the mesh can create strange results or better - different results than applying scale/rotation (Strg-A) before.

Can somebody explain to me, what is happening “behind the curtain”?

you don’t make sense at all…
how is scaling things in object mode bad? what does unwrapping have to do with object-mode scaling?

when you scale a mesh in object mode, the local coordinates of the vertices do not change. When you unwrap the mesh, Blender uses the local coordiantes of the vertices to figure out a layout that minimizes stretching. So by applying scale and rotation, you get a more accurate layout when unwrapping.

This is the connection I was looking for. Thank you very much.
