I often find that when trying to scale an object using its own axes, that the scaling direction is global. I have selected “local” and selected the pivot point to be the median point, but still it’s scaling the damn thing globally!
Any ideas?

Hmm… works fine here.
actually, I have just read somewhere that you have to press the direction key twice for it to work. So if you want to scale in the z direction, you don’t just press S Z (as you would expect) but S Z Z
Not sure why that is, but it seems to work if you do that.
