I started this project a couple of days ago. I’m trying to kick my bad habits in head modeling. I seem to make the same mistakes with each head without realizing it. I’m doing all right so far. Also, my heads tend to each look the same, with a slight resemblence to the person I’m modeling. With this one, I started out modeling key features, especially the prominent cheekbones and nose, though the nose could use some work. Also the lips need work, and the eyes don’t look right.
Felix_Kütt: No, but my heads all end up looking the same anyways.
neablo: Thanks. I’ll try to fix the ear. I DO use the same ears for all my heads, because, well, I hate modeling ears. I might remodel the ears if I can’t fix them.
Thanks again for the replies. If anybody can point out one of the reasons he doesn’t look like Al Pacino, please let me know. I’m sure he’ll look a little better with hair, and he reminds me of him, but he still doesn’t exactly like him.
I worked with the texture. I still need to add some more unevenness to the bump map, but it’s looking ok so far. At first, I really wished I had ZBrush, but I seriously think it’s fun making the bump map by hand. It feels like you have more control, but I never used ZBrush so I guess I really don’t know. Also, the skin texture is kinda plain, so I’ll be working on that too. What I will really need more help on is the shape of the head. Here’s the latest image:
Here’s the first hair test. The face still isn’t done, but I thought I could get a better feel for it if I made hair.
I need a lot of help with the face, so if you see anything I could change, please let me know. Thanks.
This will most likely be the last update for tonight. Hopefully it look a little more realistic:
I still need to make the hair more messed up and make it shinier. Does anybody know if Yafray renders particles yet? Ok that’s all. Keep the comments coming. Thanks.
I really haven’t done much work on this at all. I took a break to do a Christmas project(which by the way I didn’t finish–I was busy doing a DVD of me playing guitar to send to my grandma 3,000 miles away). So I’ll probably start working on this again. Looking at this head, I can tell who it is, but it isn’t his spitting image. I used to make excuses like I’m too inexperienced to make it perfect, and I used to settle for ‘close enough’. I’m hoping to not have to settle for anything on this one, but I still can’t find what it is that is keeping it from looking like him. I know the image lacks realism, but right now I’m worried about it looking like him. Here’s the latest render:
If anyone notices anything, please let me know. Thanks.
You need more defined creases. The bridge of the nose (part between the eyes) has a crease, as does the part where the lips rise to the base of the nose. That doesn’t make a whole lot of sense…
Look to the lower-left and lower-right of the nose:
Hobbes: I’ll work on that bridge crease. As for the lips, do you mean the creases in the corners of his mouth?
Well, I haven’t made much noticeable progress. Apparenlty they changed the way Blender interprets bump maps in the latest release. I worked mostly on re-adjusting the bump map to make it look ok. I also started on his clothes.
Dude, I just gotta say your awesome.
Try getting more detail by using the sculpt tool, it’s just strieght up vert pushin’.
You gotta share your texture workflow or something on this, seems your able to get it on the dime every time as far as the mapping goes. I suck at textureing.
Wow, thanks man. I’ll look into the sculpt mode, but if I need to significantly increase the vert count to do what I’m doin then I might just not use it. It already takes an hour to render with particles.
My texturing really could use improvement, but when I texture, I start out in a seperate window combining shades of tan and pink and stuff to get the base color for the skin, then I paint it onto the texture. Then I use a faint red colored brush to paint a little redness on the cheeks and eyes and forehead and chin and stuff. Then I just start adding some brown spots. Then I think I add stubble. I do it the long way, one hair at a time. I tint the stubble area slightly blue and add little areas of irritation. I draw veins near the temples. I think thats it for the color map. I don’t use any fancy tools in Blender, I just map the texture to the face. I can’t texture lips at all.
So anyways, it still doesn’t look like Al Pacino. I think one of the main problem areas is the mouth. If you look at one eye at a time, it looks like Pacino, but if you look at them both, it doesn’t as much, so maybe I need to re-position them.
