School projects *updated once again* 3dsmax/Zbrush/Maya warning + GAME!

Hi,
I just thought of posting this here… since I’ve not done a lot of projects lately completely with blender because we use 3dsmax in school (I study 3d design and animation).

This is like an “intro” to something, like a demo reel or animation or video portfolio… anyway, it tells who’s the guy behind the stuff you gonna see after the intro.

I made it with blender, added post production effects with adobe after effects, which was what we were learning during the course, and I took some free samples, mixed them with audacity and added them in the video with virtual dub. So mostly free programs. I could’ve done the effects with blender’s sequencer (or nodes, but I’m not very accustomed to them yet, especially when it comes to anims… I wish I could animate the effects somehow) but as I mentioned, the course was for learning After Effects. I made the logo with Photoshop (PR are the initials of my name, which is Petri Rantanen).

So, here’s the clip:
http://evtek.fi/~petrij/intro_s.avi
(XVID ~8MB, 20 secs)

If you want to see a short animation I made before this fall, it’s here:
http://users.evtek.fi/~petrij/River_AE2.avi
(XVID ~28MB, 2:20 mins)
I modelled everything (except the spring) with Blender, and animated and rendered it in 3dsmax 8,
I added some glow in Blender’s sequencer and also edited it in there. For the text/logos and stuff, I used Photoshop.
The ?! stuff was added in After Effects.

An hour of blending keeps the doctor in front of the scree… yep.
Just keep up the good program :).

I hope you like them.

nice work falgor

Thanks, mate :).

Here’s another school work.
I (and everyone in our class) rigged, well actually learned how to rig, for about three weeks. I guess I modelled the tripod character during one week and rigged it during another, not sure. The sailor is basically the rig I built when we learned to rig a human character, with slight changes. Then on monday I got the scenes into animating, and during tuesday and wednesday I animated both of the characters… It was a pretty short time, in my opinion. Anyway, I think I got decent results http://koti.mbnet.fi/falgor/questroom/temp/mysmile.gif.

Here is the animation: link (~10mb quicktime - 720x390)

And this shows the rig/control objects: link (~13mb… it’s bigger for some reason… even though it’s low resolution)

Character’s are mostly modelled in Blender, and animated in 3dsmax 8. I edited it in Blender’s compositor.

very nice ideas and execution… the spring and screw partnership is my favourite !

hey, pretty cool stuff dude. you are getting better and better! i liked the part where tripod picks up the drunkard and stores it inside

and from where you ever got the whole idea is beyond me… uhhuh.

Here is another school project. This one is Blender, because I am far better in modelling with Blender, well actually in everything, comparing to 3dsmax. And I saw no reason to use max for modelling, since I can use Blender for modelling and unwrapping where ever I am through a usb stick. The only thing I “missed” was subsufrace scattering, but I think I can live without it, knowing that it’s coming to… oops, I shouldn’t have said it… secrets.

Anyway, I did this during 3½ weeks about, I think. About 1 week of modelling the basic forms of the head. When I went to detail I think it was another week. Week beeing about 5 days and 5 hour a day, ideally ;). Then some slight post processing in the end. Nothing drastic, a bit less saturation and adding glow. I added some shine to the very edge of the bottom eyelids.

For the whole thing I used Blender with Jahka particles (thanks mate!), unfortunately it happened to be the one build which corrupted the blend and thus wouldn’t let other more advanced builds to open the file, lol ;D. For the post processing I used Photoshop 5.0 (which hopefully is going to be upgraded soon, but Gimp(shop) is a good alternative).

Here are the two pics of 4 I selected, since they were in my opinion the best ones.

medium sized pictures (1 ) (2 )

full sized pictures ( 1 ) ( 2 )

The render time was about 3 hours I think, with my amd64 3500+ @ 2.4GHz

Oh… and we had some stuff with 3dsmax’s particles. I did this in two days,
the clouds are particles.

Hmm… somebody told me that it was about 2½ weeks for head. Well, maybe it was.

“Comments and crits are welcome”? Is that it? =o

Here’s the second part to the sailor and tripod animation, there’s gonna be one more little scene after this. I just couldn’t make it in time for the deadline. A school project as well, learning character animation. About two weeks of animation… or a bit less (mostly nights). It’s all pose-to-pose animation, so no tricks.

The plot is that the sailor now wakes up inside the tripod in a hangar, and makes his escape while the tripod sleeps.
But the tripod awakes when it realizes there’s nothing in it’s container/mouth.

Quicktime (~26mb 1:20) download here

And like last time, it’s modelled in blender, animated in 3dsmax, and edited + some glow effect in Blender sequencer… DEVS MAKE THAT GLOW ANIMATABLE PLEASE!
*Jedi hand-wave

Anyway, next time it’s gonna be Blender only project. Too bad no network rendering…

The lack of replies is probably due to the usage of 3dsmax :D;
My apologies  , but experience in 3dsmax improves my changes to get a job at some studio, and then introduce Blender to the studio and convince them of its power. Some of use have to make sacrfices, lol ;D

Good job on the sailor vid, and the still character picture. Have to check out the rest later! The story pacing was good, the modelling was ok and the animation was pretty good too.
Just a few spots I noticed might be some slippage etc, and getting to his feet was better than average for a very hard motion.

Who cares if you used Max rendering? You gotta know it if you want to get into a lot of studios apparently. The more Blender can integrate the better.

One suggestion - get some free music to add to it. It adds SOOO much. Even if you don’t do any syncro, it gives people something to listen to. Just a tiny bit of atmosphere is amazing.

Thanks for the comments =)

Hi,
I was on a summer class of zbrush3, and it was GREAT!

Zbrush 3 is a really cool program… I think I could even buy it. The first week was mostly learning, and the second week was doing the character. I modelled my angel model in Blender and then exported all of the objects (all of the objects are mirrored to the other side, so not all the objects were one object) to Zbrush3, then started adding detail.

The school closed at 3pm so we had to leave the building (very exceptional) and I didn’t manage to have time to render the angel model in higher res. I’ll go there next week and render it in higher resolution and “best” render quality.

Here’s wip/testing stuff from the first week in time order.

And here is the angel model from the second week.

Blender http://users.evtek.fi/~petrij/angel.png (modelled mostly during monday o you could say it was speed modelling  without a reference image on the back, finished up the head and added ears on tuesday morning, then added the gear and wings)

Here is some pics of the topology http://users.evtek.fi/~petrij/angel_topology.jpg
and here is the finished model from Zbrush 3 (about 7.6mb mov) http://users.evtek.fi/~petrij/angel.mov

Videos in larger resolution 1280x1280 (some of them quite big):
Compete model 21mb
Middle 35mb
Bottom 12mb

You can press F11 on your browser to see all of the video, but I recommend that you just download the movies to your hard-drive and view them with VLC media player or quicktime player.

I hope you enjoy =)

Well, here is the final part to my sailor animation. I animated it when the summer break started. There’s some stuff I could improve in the last part at least, but I’m quite satisfied I finished the project as a whole. I hope you like it.

Here’s the clip (quicktime ~23mb)

Well, I had a Maya character animation course in school. Most of the animations found in the following directory were made in one day (= ~6 hours or less). It was a good course.

http://users.evtek.fi/~petrij/temp/

I compiled the three sailor parts together and added some music and sounds
http://users.evtek.fi/~petrij/sailor_full_q.avi

Also I’ve been updating my website. Now there’s some pics and animations and music.

Heh, we had a game course of 4 weeks, and in the last about 8 days me and my classmate managed to make this kinda disaster. It’s about a classic violin player wondering into a bad neighbourhood while biking home from a concert. He ends up beeing chased by a moshpit also coming from a concert. Escape Bike 1: Milfred and the Moshpit!

Made with DXStudio (uses javascript type code for the programming part).
