I am willing to go to a 3d school like VFS or think tank and I was wondering if there is any of the really good ones that has any relationship with blender or other open source programs like yafaray or lux.
I do not have many hopes for this, but if there is, it would be a really big plus on my decision. I guess I will have to learn using maya, xsi or other xenanigans, and see if later I can translate this knowledge to blender. It is a really big dream of mine to be able to work only or mostly with open source tools, but I am not sure if I learn only with closed source programs I will be able to do this…
So, this is the question. It is not like I will attend a bad school just because they use blender. There are already schools here in brazil using blender that will teach less then I already know. But I will not require the school to have the level of VFS if I can use the tool I dream to work with.
And if there is not, I leave here the advice to big schools: There are people willing to spend all their life’s saving to learn blender professionally.
Sounds familiar to me, here in Belgium not many people in IT or graphical studies or industry have ever heard of Blender. I would love to go study at university using mainly open source software (and Blender of course)… But there are no such studies here… It’s all about Microsoft, Adobe, Autodesk,… or even worse, Apple.
I’ve tought of saving up some money or working part time (like 2 days a week) so I could study on my own for a year. But yeah, that doesn’t really count to most companies as work experience or study so would really have to make a nice portfolio during that time to impress them.
I thought i would add a little bit of info here.
Recently i have been working with my High school to get Blender into the school curriculum, and so far i have been quite successful!
My school is VERY expensive, but because of this they provide virtually anything you want or need, which in this case (with some persuasion, help, and nagging from me) is Blender.
So my school does infact teach blender (only n00b blender but better than nothing), but it’s only due to me initializing it.
Hope you have some luck finding a college that teaches high level blender, i know that in Australia it would never happen at a high level!
The idea of pushing blender in a school is good. But I would expect a school to already have experience with blender to get my money.
Yes, I find specially detestable the idea of learning with apple products. With its growth, soon people will be learning in ipads, using their fingers instead of wacoms.
And this idea of yours is actually what I think I will do. Use the money to study at home. After some conversations in cgtalk, it seems that schools like VFS won’t offer me much. Better to be in online classes.
