Sci-fi explosion/shockwave

Hi all. I’m trying to learn the particle/simulation system in order to do a sci-fi style explosion and plasma-like shockwave.

Something like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HeePY41kPk

I would put other explosion elements in it too, of course. I’m thinking it would be for a spaceship exploding. I did a decent job of it with the old particle system, way way back. Like… before 2.0.

However, I’m not sure of the best approach for the shock wave any more. I was thinking using an expanding ring (of particles?) that emit fire but I’m having trouble even getting fire. Finally found a tutorial that explained enough of the process to deduce enough to get smoke, but still no fire. And I don’t know if we can add smoke/fire to particles either.

There’s so much change I guess that there’s always something that gets left out of these tutorials that I get stumped on how to make it work. Like, if you’re in the Fluid selection settings, you have to switch back to Domain to Bake. At least, that’s what I was having to do! And if the tutorials I was watching had it, I sure missed that point. Even though I was following step by step. :frowning:

Have a look at this channel https://www.youtube.com/user/neonalisation That will explain a lot. I would also do a shockwave with an expanding torus. 2.8 has a rewritten smoke and fire simulation so have a look at the documentation to find additional help.

The most important thing in the game of Simulations: Start low res.

Thanks for the link, I’ll check it out!
