Science-Fiction Planetary Artist Required

Hey folks,

My teammates and I are looking to contract an artist who can produce a high resolution pseudo animated planetary environmental image. The image is not particularly complex, but it does require that the user be competent in an advanced 3D modelling package, such as Blender, Maya, or what have you, with preference for Blender. The planetary animated background needs to be very high resolution and should probably only use procedurally generated materials so that it has infinite resolution for maximum flexibility. This animated sequence will underlay the user interface for our website which is all about showcasing our project.

Our project is a very original and exciting low budget indie / libre science fiction game currently in active development. It is of the dystopian, hard science fiction, genre. It is primarily targeted towards users of the GNU operating system.

Qualified candidates need to be comfortable having their work critiqued and sent back for further revision when necessary, follow instructions, pay attention to detail, study our artistic requirements, and deliver in a timely and reliable manner. We expect a turn around time of no more than 3 weeks, though it will probably not take that long.

The project maintains the copyright to the resulting work as well as working project files, but the selected candidate is given full attribution and listed in the game’s credits. Unlike proprietary games, they can showcase it in their personal portfolio when we are ready. We have a fairly large project following, a lot of original fictional work and technology, and their work will be showcased to the world. Qualified candidates that are progressive with respect to libre culture are especially appreciated.

We are looking to get them started as soon as possible. Candidates can contact us by email, but must follow the following guidelines. THOSE WHO DO NOT FOLLOW THEM OR AUTOMATED BOT RESPONSES WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

  • Email subject heading: Job Applicant: Science-Fiction Planetary Artist
  • Encode mail in plain text, not HTML.
  • Propose cost of task, not hourly, but for final after reading specifications we will give you;
  • approximate time required to completion;
  • link to relevant portfolio (do not attach, unless not hosted);
  • candidate’s location;
  • and, lastly, any formal or informal education / training they might have.

On that last point, we won’t hold it against candidates if their experience was not through formal training. Portfolio matters more.

If that is the case, your post doesn’t hit the right tone, in my opinion. Your post sounds too formal, like someone hiring for a company. At the same time, you don’t offer any information on yourself or that project of yours. For that reason, I fail to take you seriously.

It is of the dystopian, hard science fiction, genre. It is primarily targeted towards users of the GNU operating system.

The GNU operating system? Talking about GNU Hurd? :wink:

That’s because we are.

If you want information about myself, you can find it here. If you want more information about the project, you’re welcome to email me.

We’re referring to this.

Ok, maybe I didn’t hit the right tone here. You sound like someone hiring for a corporation not some small two-guy shop (what I assume your company to be). It sounds as if it’s meant to make yourself look bigger than you really are. Again, that’s just my impression of it and I wanted to inform you about that.
I do understand that it’s not really fair to derail your thread like this however, so I apologize for that. I will delete my posts at your request.

If you want information about myself, you can find it here. If you want more information about the project, you’re welcome to email me.

Thank you. Another “tip” on being taken seriously: Don’t show up on a 9/11 Truther website.

We’re referring to this.

I hope you will agree that the unambigious and “politically correct” term to use here would be GNU/Linux. Unless you’re actually targeting hurd (and only hurd), otherwise you could use the term GNU operating systems.

That’s fine, but it doesn’t really matter who we are, where we’re from, our nationality, creed, magnitude, speculation of our aims, or political convictions. What matters are our technical and creative requirements for this project.

It’s immaterial to me, but it would be better if you added something constructive, such as helping us to find someone from the community who is a good prospective candidate.

My views on that subject are immaterial here and beyond the scope of this forum. However, if you wish to peruse them, you’re certainly welcome to do so outside of the subject matter of this forum.

There is a reason why the term used was GNU and, like my creed, is beyond the scope of this forum.

try good ol’ Jonathan Williamson of blender cookie.com he worked some on project durian the third blender open movie Sintel hope it helps

It does matter who you are and what you are like. This is a potential business relationship after all.

It’s immaterial to me, but it would be better if you added something constructive, such as helping us to find someone from the community who is a good prospective candidate.

By telling you what impression you make on me, I am trying to be constructive.
If you’re a small shop with little funds, you best make an impression that you are cool, laid-back people. You already sound like someone very peculiar, who might end up being trouble to deal with. I won’t bid on such jobs, others might. Again, that’s just my honest impression. If you prefer I didn’t tell you, I’ll just shut up.

My views on that subject are immaterial here and beyond the scope of this forum. However, if you wish to peruse them, you’re certainly welcome to do so outside of the subject matter of this forum.

It all ties together. Conspiracy Theorists can be tough people to deal (and reason) with. As for your Open Letter: It seems to rest primarily on a scientifically flawed paper, published in a sketchy journal by conspiracy theorists. He who searches, will find.

I’d prefer it if you didn’t.

As I already said, this is off topic. As shocking and controversial as you might think it to be, to most of the world, it’s common knowledge. If you have a mailing address you’d like a sample mailed delivered so you can take it to an independent lab, you’re welcome to. As for the paper, I’m personal friends with the author and I attended the Toronto Hearings. You’d be in a better position to comment after educating yourself on the subject over the last ten years of research as opposed to relying on a cursory and superficial assessment of the reputation of an arbitrary journal (which didn’t write the paper), despite the fact that Harrit’s findings have been replicated multiple times by 3rd parties. If you wish to discuss this further, you can email me - but spare the forum dedicated to an advanced 3D imaging tool.

Thank you. =)
