I didnt really know how to title this post, but let me give you some details. I want to start planning for a project, a scifi episodic short film, and I would like for it to be a community driven project. ive created a small forum that is divided up into sections like races, planets, technology, etc. Is all im asking for is for people to post there creations and I plan on using and incorporating these into the project. Im not asking for people to model or animate or anything of the sort, just asking for your imagination. I know what your prob thinking…oh great another kid thinking hes gonna create a short fil in a matter of weeks. well thats not my thoughts at all, I plan on spending a good 4-6 weeks just on the story and 1-2 years creating the short films. I would love to hear your thoughts on the community driven story
A community driven story would be disjointed and unfocused. A story and consistent Universe needs to come from at most a close collaboration of a very small number of people, with a lot of cross-pollination of ideas.
This will just result in a horrid and unsatisfying mishmash.
If you look at a film or series it will likely have departments dedicated to certain tasks under an overall vision. How much freedom they get depends on the structure and the trust put in these people. For example there will be a visual design department for the look, and they will design everything in order to keep things consistent (very necessary to quickly visually distinguish between, for example, races - look at ship designs in Star Trek - it is easy to tell a ship’s race affiliation from a simple glance). If things aren’t consistent then no-one watching will know what is going on.
Long and short. Unless you lay down a detailed hierarchy of people to oversee and direct the design and ideas of submitters, or lay down some pretty detailed directions beforehand, this is a non-starter.
First off thank you for your post and yes ive consider that fact before, kinda like writing a sentence with both hands the same time…it can get kind of messy! I guess the solution to this would be give a starting point of my views on the story, and I was planning on taking the ideas and fit them to the story. About the visual part I would be doing that so all of style would be consistent. I guess I should of got the foundation done before posting :o, but agian thank you for posting Alex much appreciated!
