scribbling feature in linux, useful for animating etc

I discovered by accident a new feature in Linux Ubuntu Feisty Fawn.

You can draw all over the screen with a red line. This is very useful for animating. I saw a similar proprietary application like this being used ages ago in a major animation studio. I’m yet to find a particular use for this in my own work flow, but I’m sure it will be very handy. Perhaps for planning animation arcs, noting positions etc…

To enable, turn on desktop effects. To draw, hold ALT+Windows key+LMB, then just scribble away! To clear your lines, hit ALT+Windows key+K.

Sorry if it’s old news.

And the desktop/window manager? Gnome I guess?!

Yes That’s right. I’m using Gnome. But I don’t know if that matters. It’s a Compiz/Beryl feature as far as I can tell. I’m using Feisty’s standard desktop effects plugin.
There’s a little more info at

If anyone knows a link for official documentation, please post it.

This feature is specific to the Beryl window manager.
