Sculpting a Zombie Head in Blender

I’m learning the Sculpting a Zombie Head in Blender tutorial. I haven’t gotten very far. He says to use the snake tool?? or something to expand the neck. I’ve tried extruding and scaling but it doesn’t expand the way it does in the video. Does anyone know how to do this?

At some point he uses the Snake brush. Is that what you mean? It is one of the brush selections.

Sorry. I’m just beginning to learn. I searched the forums but can’t find anything about a Snake brush or even brush selection. I even have a book and I can’t find it.

when you go into sculpt mode click hit “t” to show the toolshelf on the left if it isn’t already displayed
now click on the picture of the current tool in the top of the toolshelf
this should give you a bunch of choices one of which is the snake tool

Tried it. Didn’t work. He does it in Edit mode

What you need to show is what stage you are having the problem, what operations have you tried and what result you get. Just saying that “it doesn’t expand the way it does in the video” doesn’t really help at all as it could mean a million different things.
I assume you mean this tutorial http://www.youtube.com/user/benjamindbailey#p/c/98DB4A35F97C8257/0/h1EciZRd57g for those other users having to guess what you are talking about.

I think what you’re seeing is he applies the subsurf and multires modifiers in edit mode and then switches to sculpt mode
the sculpt tools aren’t available in edit mode

Nothing happens when I hit T in sculpt mode. Is there a different way to show the toolshelf? I’m using 2.49b if that makes a difference.

there’s your problem, 2.49b
the sculpting system has been re-written for the newer versions and you won’t be able to follow that tutorial unless you download a new build
good luck, let us know how it works out

I got 2.55. When I click on the picture in the toolshelf it only shows the f brush. I see the snake hook tool but that’s not what he does. When he does it a black dotted line comes out from the center with two arrows pointing in both directions around the cursor. Does anyone know how to do this?

In the future, do this:

Give a link to the video and tell us at what point in minutes and seconds you are referring to.

I had just watched it the other day when I first responded and he does use the Snake (Hook) tool. So what is confusing you is he is talking about what he will do later. Use the snake hook tool to make drips.

To scale the neck there at that point in the video, (when he is talking about the snake tool he will use later), he uses scale along the x. That is S then X to constrain on that axis.

When I scale it it looks like this. What am I doing wrong?

try scaling on the z axis first.

Looks like you don’t have enough selected. Put it in wireframe and grab all the points along the bottom then scale on the x.
