Sculpting human head; Best practices

Hi ,guys, i am currently trying my self in human bust sculpting.

This is on of my first attempts (screen and mega-link lower). I was trying to sculpt Vi from LOL (however i am not focused on making portrait), following this image (not original guide):

I just want to make everything right and fix all mistakes before moving on to details.

I would like to know:

  • your thoughts about it (advice and critics (i am not a professional artist, please explain what is wrong and how to fix it)
  • In particular, can somebody give me a piece of advice how to make this face look more feminine?
  • Can somebody name some free guides about sculpting human head (facial expressions, emotions, hairstyles etc.)?

Never done sculpting myself, so applaud your effort! Can give my input on the sculpt tho. Id say the anatomy of the face could be improved. If you are trying to model something like the image at the top, then I’d suggest using lots of references, and pay attention to the references as much as possible. The back of the head looks like it goes out too far, and the general face seems too wide and fat to me. In regards to making it look more feminine, eyes, mouth and nose are key. Female eyes seems almost feline in their appearance. Noses tend to be slimmer and more petite, and lips tend to be fuller. Also tends to be less fat on the face, with cheek bones being more pronounced (not always). If you are diving into this head first, without any real knowledge of anatomy, then I would definitely recommend looking at a few basic guides. If you draw, then Youtube has some great videos for learning to draw eyes, noses mouths, and that basic knowledge can easily translate over into 3D. You don’t have to spend ages doing it, but it will help you get a rough idea.

Good luck

What you ask is so big, It will take me years to even try to explain it… (because I probably don’t even know)
But one thing makes the most difference in my quest (similar to yours) and that is Observation.
Observation is really hard to explain, to someone that never have tried to copy something exactly as it is, not as he remembers. Memory is not god at all for this tasks. Only with good observation, you can get there. And then when you know how to copy, you can start to do your own thing, just copying parts or elements of different references, and then some day, maybe you can create your own things. There is a book call draw with the right side of your brain that explains this thing. I never read it directly, but I learn a lot from other people about this. you can find in youtube material about observatión and this book. It will literally change your approach.

About your model, you know that it is not good, and it has no resemblance to what you try to copy, and that is because you have not try to copy, you just try to do something from memory. And you can see it is not working. Try to do something easy from memory, and then do it looking hard to references. you will see the difference.
