Sculpting is unbearably slow.

Been using Blender for a while, finally found an excuse to try and learn the sculpt mode, problem is when I put the mesh up into a high level of vertices, (around 250,000) it runs really slow.

Anyone know any good methods to get it to run at a decent speed?

Current PC setup is:
MSI K9A2 CF-F
AMD Phenom 9500 (~2.2 GHz, 4 Cores)
NVIDIA 9600GT (512MB of VRAM)
2GB DDR2 RAM
Windows XP Professional SP3/Ubuntu 8.10

Sounds strange … with those specs, I would expect that you could push over 1,000,000 polys. A cube subdivided to 1.5 million starts to lag a bit on my system (specs in my signature). Linux performs better, so that a 6 million poly mesh is almost workable …

Thanks for the response. It only runs slow at that amount when I was working with multi-res meshes. Brain wasn’t thinking enough to just use subdivision.

There’s partial draw mode.

You could also sculpt while in GLSL mode, if you have a powerful card you can have a rather decent amount of faces before it becomes unworkable and yet partial redraw doesn’t do anything when you use GLSL.

Hey, thanks, partial redraw seems to be making it run alot faster. Not sure how to enable GLSL mode though.

GLSL shaders are enabled in the game menu, then you can go to textured view mode to see it.

Partial redraw hasn’t been modified to work with it yet since it just came in 2.48.

does hiding un-sculpted areas help?

ALT-B works good.
