Sculpting / multires with animation in mind ...?

Hey guys,
I’m in the process of building up a character with the hope of animating him, i’m making heavy use of the sculting tools to pull out my detail. It’s while doing this, that with little experience i started to think about how would i possibly be able to rig and animate a character at such high density?
So what’s the prefered method of combining a detailed character with animation? is using the sculting tools a bad idea?
Is it possible to rig and animate and level 3 and only bump it up at render time?
Please share your thoughts with using the sculpt tool with intent to animate.
Thanks - Dave

Yes that is the idea… model at high level, rig/animate at low level, and set the render level back to high.

Of course in a lot of productions the highest level is only used for creating a texture for the low res version.

I’m not sure if I understand what the question is. Animating a model can be done in different ways. Most preferd for me is using bones and using weight painting.

Or are you’re asking how you can reduce render time? If that’s the case, then usually slower render time means higher quality (USUALLY), and quick rendering means taking down on the quality…usually. Personally I think if you have a good model and good lighting, then that can actually sometimes save render time. (Because you can take down for example OSA…)

Hi, actually animating with multires enabled is not possible…well it is possible, but it doesn´t work well.

You should follow these steps:

1- Model the lowres character (make a nice UV Layout)

2 - detail it with multires

3 - bake the highres model displacement textures in XNormal or ORB.

4 - apply the displacement textures to you lowres model, animate it and then render it with subsurf enabled. (That will give the model enough polys to achieve good displacement detail)
