Sculpting with UVs and displacements.

Actually, you don’t need to use pointiness, because you already have a displacement map, which can be used for shading.

Nice one Bare
@Glab
I don’t quite agree. You might use the AO map (with some tweaking) instead.
However neither of them is a dirt, a cavity map/mask which involves edges and angles calculations.
Pointiness works exactly like dirt vertex painting set. There’s a significant difference though. Vertex painting doesn’t support high res level in mutlires-subd modifiers. On the other hand, pointiness is a 32 bit process, reacts better with a coloramp node.
The good news: Using a shadeless node set up somehow, you can bake/render a dirt map by pointiness.

thank you, it’s a pleasure to have a compliment from you michalis

that’s very cool :slight_smile:

Hey, did anyone seen this post ? http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=909466

just found when googling.

I need to learn python…
Found this neat sounding addon today:

Among other things it takes a UV island and converts it into a nice, squared grid.
But it works only for a single island, not all selected islands on the the UV layout at once.

Still, should work faster with macros than what I’m doing now. Had to put some delays in my usual macro for the popup menus having time to appear.

@sir
This is a well known addon. It basically does what follow active quads do. That’s all. A few clicks less, maybe…

Exactly.
While adding seams is still kind of fun, unwrapping the result is less so.
Still haven’t tried using the addon with a keyboard macro, though.

Anyway, what I begin to like about blender is that it supports creative lazyness:

No more fiddling around with values in material or compositor, no need to set file format.
Still have to rename the resulting files, but that’s a minor issue.

Oh, and: No, that is not supposed to be a displacement map.

Hmm, since I didn’t post any “art” for a while:

People over at reddit became fed up with the tutor4you coffee cup, so I made them a slightly different version. :wink:

He he, very nice Sir!!!
Just listening the blade runner movie soundtrack…

We have some goodies, new OGL tricks. AO, DOF, and all working in GLSL mode
here’s one real time rendering. Some nonsense, just testing, sorry.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/24090090/GLSL_tex_AO_DOF.jpg

We have a new implementation.
OGL SSAO in viewport. It can be rendered (anti aliased) by hitting the camera-flashing button on the header.
Under AO (n panel), strength=10, distance=0.01. What we get? Similar to the old BI outline, much better though. Almost a freestyle thing.

With the bottom left matcap

This one using a custom matcap. Image exported and traced in AdobeIllustrator. A vector graphic, free of pixels, can be printed on a wall paper 3x3 meters. LOL (I mean, why not?)

Trying the DOF in the viewport, works really well.
openGL renders:

and the freestyle hack with your setting above(AO and DOF):

and some BI Rendering,playing around:

Happy Blending

Fun!

AA settings elude me, but what’s a day without learning something new?

You sir have just posted one of the first images in this entire thread that makes use of this technique in a way that’s not of the sci-fi genre or a spaceship.

I’ve been thinking that the tests have started to get a little repetitive in terms of subject, nice that people are exploring its use for different ideas.

@DERBENDER
@Sir Richfield
Beautiful posts!!!

I really like the arty-party here :slight_smile:

Thanks guys,
so here is another displacement map, done using only the compositor in blender, hope it is not too bad.

This is my first post on the forums in a long time. I’m faking some ufo footage, and I used this technique to make the alien ship:

Right click --> open in a new tab to see full resolution.

I still can’t do this :confused:

Me neither!

@DCBloodHound
Can’t do what exactly?
@Mealea.
Hey, on post #1, first sentence

“Inspired by some zbrush technics of my good friend MealeaYing.
