search engine blender help....

suppose someone doesn’t know how to create a new layer in blender. what keywords would you use to find a useful answer?

wouldn’t you expect to be able to put something like “blender create new layer” or “blender make new layer” and get at least one if not several specific useful answers right off?

i’ve be on the net for about 20 years…i’ve done a lot of searching, i know very well how to search and use keywords and get results…but besides that, it shouldn’t have to take a search expert to find an answer to a question like that. there used to be a number of hits that addressed what you searched for. that is just not the case now.

please tell me how would one go about finding that out by searching? obviously one could go to the manual but this is about a search engine returning less than useful answers to an easy question…the results that get returned now on the first page are the results you used to find on page 3 to 7 in the past.

go ahead and search for an answer to that question and post here what you did and what you got.

This belongs in the Support/Basics & Interface section of the forums, not the Off Topic Chat. As for creating new layers, I don’t think there’s a way to do that. Correct me if I’m wrong, but you’re limited to only the 20 that we have.

Edit: Relevant thread. https://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?386770-Unlimited-layers

Explain what you want to do.
Layers in blender are not like layers in something like photoshop.
Do you want scene layers (use a combination of the 20 available to you) or render layers (you create them in the render layers panel)

“…this is about a search engine returning less than useful answers to an easy question”.

it’s not about getting help for the example question i posed.

I’d avoid a quote search. Blender & Layer seem most relevant / required. More interchangeable terms (new, make, create, move etc) would be in the OR field. I’d expect matching terms, useful answers are hoped for.

If you say so.

The content being crawled and the algorithms that help parse it are changing constantly, amongst other variables. That can happen.

Still, you’re more likely to get results changing your self / thinking / approach than by hoping to sway search providers. Richards advice applies beyond this example.

quotes were for the purpose of the post. i noticed though that you didn’t post any relevant hits. yes that is what search is for. they change all the time?. that is part of my point…they changed for the worse.

I didn’t search. Even if many did, it won’t prove some systemic degradation of results across the board. Lets say it was proved. Next step is?

Changing? Yes. Worse? Not in my experience so far.

were you offended in some way?

Search like you are asking a person

for example,

How to find Katie Perry

How to render fast in Blender

Useful Blender tricks

Just sharing a contrasting data point, and reservations about the methodology proposed. No offense taken or meant.
