wip, i came back to this not long age. im playing with vertex painting.
instead of using vertex painting, you could uvmap basic texture to it, and use texture painting. that’s way cooler… you dont need so complex meshes either…

Agree that UV works easier way, but this works too and that is what matter Easiest way to UV is via obj export and UV mapper, I used this method in my 24h contest firstly and achieve by this a powerfull tool for my next work. If you don´t know how to do it, try to search Questions and Answers forum or PM me, I will explaint it to you If you are interested.
Maybe some more rust and more expresive lighting would be next step to get this pic even better.
