Segmentation Faults, ATI 3D Rage Pro and Mandrake Linux

I run Mandrake Linux 9.1 and have a ATI 3D Rage Po graphics card. I’ve tried to get blender running before, however itdoes not run at all, it crashes with a ‘segmentation fault’. I’ve tried looking for new drivers, but ATI don’t have any for this card for Linux. I’ve tried both with MESA installed and uninstalled, and that appears to make no difference. Is there anything else I should try to get it running?

I’m going to reinstall Mandrake soon as I plan on adding a new hard drive and want to change the partitioning of my current HD. I know that when I come to setting up XFree86, I will get a message to the effect of “You graphics card support 3D Acceleration, however this is not implemented in XFree86 4. You can either install XFree86 3.3.6, which support 3D Acceleration, or install XFree86 4, which may have better support in 2D”

I’m given the choice of XFree86 4, XFree86 3.3.6 or XFree86 3.3.6 with 3D Acceleration support. Which of these should I choose for blender? (I don’t play any 3D games or anything like that.)

Also, when I installed before, Mandrake installed the Mach64 Utah X Server. Is this right or should I change it next time?

Thanks for any help,

Ian

The ATI 3D Rage Po graphics card is a Mach 64 card
(prettty sure, almost certain). This card, despite its name, is not really a true 3D card in the modern sense of the word. If your computer is of the same vintage as the graphics card I doubt Blender will ever run at a usable speed even if you manage to get Mesa or Utah-glx working. :frowning:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

You may want to check out the GATOS project…

http://gatos.sourceforge.net/

It provides some enhanced drivers for your card… Read through instructions carefully before even downloading…

Also you may need a program called 3Diag… When you run it checks whether 3D acceleration is enabled on your system… If not it will give you instructions on what to do to enable it…

ATI cards don’t have a good reputation on working along with Blender, but anyway I like my ATI RAGE FURY, it works quite well and I don’t wanna change it for the world (well, o.k. when I get some money I will, but for the moment it does the job well… :P)…

Wish you good luck…

Spyros.

Well I’ve reinstalled Mandrake now with a new hardrive and this time I chose the Mach64 3D Rage Pro server and Blender works fine.

Thanks for the advice (even though I didn’t use it… )
