select linked vertices at runtime?

in edit mode if you mouse over a vertices and hit L the mesh will be selected and other parts of the mesh that are not connected will remain unselected. i was hoping to be able to use something Similar in the bge but my understanding of how the mesh api works is limited. if anyone could provide me with a method of doing this i would be very Grateful :slight_smile:
