Selecting Polygons

Can any one help me with this?

I am doing the above tutorial and notice that they talk of “selecting” polygons for the purpose of extruding. I must be doing something wrong as every time I try to select one shape it selects all polygons shapes

Any ideas how to do this properly?

when you add the curve, it will go into edit mode so you can adjust the vertices. After you have finished creating one of the shapes, press tab to get out of edit mode before inserting another curve. Otherwise all of the shapes will be considered as one object.
