I heard in order to sell a game with blender you also have to release the source code and anyone who buys that game can also legally distribute this game for free. Is this true?
So are there any other things that I can do to prevent others from distributing a game I made in blender?

This alternative player not only is successful in working around the GPL, but it’s a legal workaround as well.
Your .blend is still distributed, but it’s in a player which puts it in the equivalent of a near impenetrable box, thus ensuring that you can only play the file instead of opening it.
Thanks, do you know if it will ever be released for mac?
There is actually little you can do to prevent others from distributing a game you made with Blender. Even if you manage to encrypt the .blend file somehow, a dedicated person could extract it and distribute it, Your best bet is to use the Creative Commons license (or GPL) if you are going to create a game with Blender.
If you want to keep it closed-source and proprietary your best bet is to use another package or programming language/kit to create your game.
If you are considering making your game with Blender, please read the GNU Public License very carefully as Blender is released under the GNU Public License. Make sure you understand the term set forth by that license before investing your time and effort.
