Seltorians

Greetings,

I’m working on some starships to animate space battles using Blender.

Here’s a couple shots of my Seltorian Heavy Cruiser …

And a couple shots of my Seltorian fleet (1 Dreadnaught, 2 Heavy Cruisers)

The ships are still works in progress, and if anyone likes them I’ll post updates in the future. (I already realize the textures need work. These are just early renders and I wanted something other than the default grey.)

One of my weaknesses is definitely lighting, so if anyone has any tips on how to improve the lighting for the scenes, that would be great.

I think the texturing is very nice as are the concepts of the models, however there really isn’t much to comment on seeing as I have no idea what you want to do with this.

The first couple shots are extremely dark. For a moment I thought they were just blobs of light in space. (Then I realized I was running at half my normal bright and foo, but, they’re still kinda dark.)

Otherwise, they look good and feel a little bit like homeworld ships; don’t really have anything useful to say though.

Thanks for both your guys’ comments

Yeah, I thought the first two were two dark too. The second set of pics is how the light was set up at first, then I was toying around trying to see how I could change the light to make it better and got the lighting for the first set of pics. I agree, I don’t like the lighting in the first ones as much, and changed it back to the way it was for now.

You really think they look like Homeworld ships? Thanks. That’s not what I was going for particularly, but I like that game and it’s cool to have some of my stuff compared to it.

I’m gonna make a ‘commercial’ for a game I play called Federation Commander, which is kind of a spin-off of Star Fleet Battles, both of which are table-top board games. This ‘commercial’ isn’t something I’m getting paid for, it’s just something I want to do for a learning project more than anything else. I figure animating spaceships flying around each other is probably easier than animating the body movements of creatures. If I end up liking the end result enough I’m thinking about donating it to the people who publish the game to see if they’d like it.

The game is based on the Star Trek universe, during the time period of the old series. These Seltorians are insect creatures that overthrew the Tholians in their home galaxy and followed them when they fled to ours. I plan on playing out the battle with the game system and making a log using their computer program. Then I’ll use the log as a storyboard since it’ll have all the information on ship placement, flight path, which weapons fire when, and what parts of the ships take damage, etc. and the timing of it all.

Here’s a photo of the miniature I’m basing my model off of …

Obviously I’m taking liberties as far as the color scheme. I wanted something that would show more plating in the hull, rather than just being a solid color.

Thanks again for the input
