separate morph targets?

Has anyone written anything to allow different models with the same topology to be referenced for shape keys a la Maya, Max (or most other apps for that matter).
I couldn’t find anything with my brisk search of the forums.

This has never been done? Is there no way around this workflow as it stands?

Normally you convert separate objects to embedded morphs using the “rvk1 to rvk2” script.
