I need to have only the voices from a song. How can I do this with Audacity? I want to remove everything except the lyrics. Here is the song:

Unless you have the original 3-layer master tape, it’s pretty much impossible to seperate vocals from instruments. Why would you want to do this, anyway?
Depends on the source material and how clean you need to rip it for your purposes. Try a carefully placed notch or high pass filter with a sharp “q”. Then eq to taste. The included filters in audacity aren’t that great but I think it supports vst’s so you may have better luck with some of the free stuff out there. Depending on how the song is mixed you might try flipping the phase of one channel and bouncing down to mono. With luck, some stuff you don’t want will be phase cancelled out, then proceed with the HP or notch filter and eq. Most of the time, the voice is center mixed, so that will probably get cancelled, but it will leave you with only the beat.

Sounds logical, but it doesn’t work. Better results can be had with precise high quality filtering and parametric subtractive eq’s. Someone a little more versed in physics or DSP can probably explain it better, but what you end up with when you bounce down to mono is not “perfectly” in phase with the original (assuming you bounced that one down to mono too). I think it has something to do with the “stepping” of the sample rate and when you bounce, some interpolation happens. Off onee sample and you won’t be in phase.
