Several Questions From a Noob

Hello everyone, i’ve been working with blender for about 1 year or so, and so far it has fullfilled all of my ideas. I have some ideas of what i want to do, but i have some small questions…
1.)What can i do to make a huge map (many verts etc…) and still make it run faster?
Could i have it so when you are walking around that objects/map has more detail and verts when you get near them? and further away objects would all be flat planes.
2.)How can i make a cobweb with just a plane? I tryed making it “add” insead of opaque, but i can still see sort of a foggy outline of the plane.
3.)I would like to know if there is a tut for making good/realistic trees, could i get a link?

don’t use a lot of physics and a lot of alpha maps and a lot of verts .

use alpha maps instead of add maps , for a cobweb , alpha is more suitable

1. Hey. Welcome to the forums. What you need to do is to make an LOD system. LOD is Level of detail. You have already mentioned this. You have an alpha plane following you for a tree and when you get close enough to it it turns into a 3d tree. There are ways to do this, but it would take me too much of my little time to explain it.

Also, there is a program called Crystal Space that has an add on to blender. Crystal Space is a truly amazing game engine. You can make fire with just a few buttons.

2. To make a good cobweb, you need to have a cobweb with a black background in it. go to photoshop or something and go to select > color range > select Black > select inverse > Copy > Paste > delete the background > save as .png. Thats how you apply an alpha map in case you didn’t know.

I found this a while back. It is pretty high poly, but with good results. You can change the settings in it to make it more low poly, or run a few (included with blender) poly reducer scripts on it.

hmm… alpha maps… that sounds really familiar, i’ve heard that term used many times and I am really curious about it, where should i ask about them/learn about them? I will try googling LOD system… see what i can come up with. I’ve also heard about crystal space, i may check that out too. Does cyrstal space read .blend files? or do i need to export my blend files to something different? I was reading something about height maps and how they are read differently and are loaded quicker so you can have high-quality maps without it being slow? idk if i got that right, lol, but it would be awesome if you could point me in the right direction for that as well. AHH!!! so many questions and so much homework!!! i will check back later today. Crystal Space is the rendering engine (basically) but the interface is just an box on top of the blender client. LoD is just making High Poly versions of Low Poly Objects. You could create landscape like this. An alpha channel is just Nothingness. You have a spiderweb on top of a big gap in the image. Its normally represented by a white and gray checkerboard.

You can also just download, click and save the image provided in the hangar tut to use for the example, however, learning to make your own, is important too.

Trees:
Download the file in the signature and put tree in the search box. There are many links excellent examples/tuts to make trees

LOD examples. There are lod examples for blender, very simple easy to understand. I have one on my drive, but I dont know what its called to find it. Great huh? I need time to organize, so I can organize. Laughing.

Use google advanced search for blender LOD blends LOD etc for the web and for blenderartiests.org as a site parameter.

I downloaded the list of links you had, and it is AWSOME!!! Also, the tut for making alpha masked images is a good one, i thought i knew what alpha images were and that tut confirmed it. Thanks so much… one more really quick question, i am REALLY bad a making low-poly chars for games, i have no clue how to even check how many verts i have. It seems when i make a character, i either have to many or to little, i have seen some tools where you can just use a slider to adjust detail/amount of verts.

Hmmm, no sliders in blender. Make sure the top window is I for user preferences.
In edit mode shift space to take the 3d view full screen. Now look to the right of the I user preference header.

See where it says Ve (verts) Ed (editing) Fa (faces).

Making low polly characters. Go ahead and start with a hi polly, and put it on level 2. On level 1, model your low polly over the hi polly. Using the extrusion method.

Click the layer 1 alone now and then to see how you are doing. Dont be afraid to move the newly added verts into the mesh on layer 2. You will understand when you do it. That makes a tight fit of your new model.

It may take a day the first time you try it, but the next time it may take only 4 hours. Its a lot of fun actually.

Do a search for blender dahlia, I think, in google. Download the free movie (you can buy others from the author too).

This is an excellent video. Watch it a couple times, its fascinating to watch, and you will be make low polly characters in no time.

Yeah if anyone could show how to do character rigs like that I would go crazy. Please send a link or give out a basic idea of what to do on starting to do that. I’ve got bones down but I still need to work with shape keys

You should start a new thread, instead of highjacking a thread.lol.

You cant use shapkeys in the GE, only for animations. The bsod is a good place to learn it from.

download the file in my sig and type in bsod in the search.

Yeah, is that wut they are called? shape keys? sounds awesome. i wouldnt mind doing some animation stuff too, it is ez to model fat peeps. :slight_smile:
