Shadow as a tomographic projection

Hi everybody, I am new to Blender and new to this forum so perhaps this topic was covered before, however I did not find the solution.

I want to simulated the projection of an object by a TEM or X-Ray or similar, and I think the best way is by computing a special shadow. I mean the intensity in each poiint of the shadow is proportional to the amount of object’s material traversed by the light ray.

I tried rendering a volume, varying its density, with raytracing transparency, varying the scattering, etc., but nothing works as I want.

I am missing something? Probably I am not fully understanding the way the shadows are computed.

Is there a better way to do that?

Thank you in advance. If anyone can provide a minimum working example would be wonderful
