Shadows only flicker then disappear when adjusting light source, no shadows in final render

I am using eevee, when I use cycles they appear fine. Ive tried adjusting many settings, maybe its because of my laptop? iris xe graphics card

This could happen for a bunch of reasons (scene size/light disance, shadows accidentially deactivated in eevee…). To rule out a hardware problem: restart blender, make a simple scene (plane with object that casts the shadow + a light) and see if there is a shadwow. If yes, hardware/drivers are fine - the problem is in your scene.

Thank you for your feedback. I have tried making a new project with a cube and a plane but the issue persists. If I restart blender and go to the project, sometimes the shadows will appear(before eventually disappearing again) although the rendered image still does not show the shadows being cast. Should I check to see if my drivers are up to date next? perhaps I can transfer the project to my desktop which uses an rtx 3070 graphics card. Its just surprising that a few shadows would be that taxing on my laptop though. Scene size is small, light is close, and shadows are enabled.

I doubt that this a performance issue - especially as it´s reproducable with a simple scene.

You could at first try to set the display graphics from “openGL” to “vulcan” (or vice versa) and see if the shadows work better. Look at preferences>system>display graphics

If this has no effect, I definitly would try to update the drivers (if there is a newer version). Additionally: My guess is that the scene would work fine on your desktop.

I’ll try this when I get back from work. Last night I tried switching to vulcan and restarting blender but it said it failed to switch to vulcan and reverted back to openGL for some reason. I’ll also try opening it on my desktop to see if its just a problem with the computer. Thank you so much for the fast reply, I’m trying to perfect this donut so I can move on to the next project!

As far as I know Blender dropped support for Iris XE (and other integrated graphics cards) after 2.93 so if you are using a newer Blender version that might be the cause

Well thats unfortunate. If thats the case, atleast I can still work on projects on the laptop; I’ll just have to transfer them onto my pc for rendering and stuff. Well I’ll post an update once I try these fixes. Thanks!

You could upload the blend file here, then we can see how the scene/shadows work for us.

Absolutely, I tried to do that this morning but it said my blender artists account was too new to upload the .blend file. I will try again when I get back tonight.

General suggestion when posting a screenshot. Don’t take a picture of your screen with your phone. Learn to take a snapshot of your entire screen with either the print screen feature on Windows, or taking a snapshot on Mac.

Yes that would be ideal, thank you. I know how to take a screenshot but I was already using my phone to search for answers at the time because it was faster than continually switching tabs while trying to diagnose the issue. I don’t use forums very often, but if that is the proper etiquette then I will do that moving forward.

The shadows are casted properly on my PC! I will still check to see if my drivers are up to date on my laptop, but thank you all for reaching out with your helpful advice. This is my first ever blender project (will add sprinkles)!
