Shark (sort of)

Th is something that I created for a Weekend challenge, except that I under estimated the amount of time it would take to model, rig and texture a character. I decided not to give up on him, and I’m wondering if he looks okay to you, or if there are any changes you think I should make.

Looks great to me. The only thing I would comment on is the neck, the angular connection is a bit much even leading to a bit of a look of a cobra head more than a shark.

Now that you mention it, you’re right, it does look off. Here’s a closeup of the un-posed model. At the moment I’m not sure how I should adjust the neck so it will still look ‘shark-like’

I’d try keeping the width of the neck like that, just bend it around to look forward without flaring the neck.

I would position the head forward by default–sort of sloping back towards the shoulders, giving him a slightly hunched-forward appearance. The neck should be pretty thick, I think.

Sound’s like it will work. Here’s a shot of what I have so far.

Here’s an update. How’s he looking so far?

It looks pretty cool, but I think you should add fin-like things on his arms, kind of like the zoras on Zelda.

Well, personally, the neck looks better but now I think the snout (nose/whatever) looks too rounded and more dinosaur-like than shark-like.

At first I wasn’t sure about add fins, but you convinced me. I’m wondering if I should add the to the legs as well.

Good point. I was thinking the eye placement, and I figured that forward-facing eyes and an unobstructed view would be more would be more useful for a bipedal creature.

I agree with the forward facing eyes, but I still believe the nose should be pointed a bit more. Considering it resembles a great white shark a lot, I got a picture just to show what I meant a little better.

I just think the nose needs to be more pointed is all, however, you could always go into the complete opposite direction and attempt a hammer head

Also, just a quick idea, possibly webbed hands and feet?

The model is actually based off a Bignose shark, so the nose won’t be that pointed. The toes are already webbed (except for the big toe), and webbing between the fingers would restrict their mobility in relation to each other.

Well even with the Bignose shark, it’s nose is still pointy in a vertical relation rather than vertical and horizontal like the Great White. So I still think it could be more flattened. After all, sharks are made to be fluid-dynamic, and the more surface area hitting something at any given time increases drag. Just sayin’.

Okay, I’ve changed the nose. I’m not sure if I should keep it like this, or make it narrower. Hopefully I’m going in the right direction. I do have some worries about the edgeloops, especially around the eyes.

@Krisnack I think the nose looks a lot better, but to me, it seems the head could be a little wider. seems to be the only proportion that looks a bit off to me, other than that I’m loving it.

Now that you mention it, the head could use some tweaking. I’ve also adjusted the edgeloops around the eyes. How do things look?

The eyes are to forward facing. it looks wolf like. Have the eyes pointing to the side.

Originally I did have the eyes facing towards the side, however I decided that binocular vision is much more useful to to a two-legged creature. Heck, pretty much every four-legged predator has eyes facing the front.

Yay for arm fins, but personally I liked him better when his head had (maybe less functional) side-facing eyes, and the nose was the way it was before. Also, you should add a dorsal fin, not sure if he has one but it would be a little more shark-like, lol, I love how I have suggested fins twice. Anyway, best of luck.

Here’s the positioning of the dorsal fins, as well as the pelvic and anal fins. Does it look ready to merge?
