Should I scrap my textbook?

Hi(gh)!

Having used (and thus being used to) POV-Ray since more than 20 years, I once more started an attempt to learn Blender from the very beginning. From my last attempt about two years ago, I have a German textbook dealing with Blender 2.6 - but the current version is 2.7, and at the very start of the introduction tutorial I noticed that basic features like selecting an edge etc. must have changed since. There is at least one German (but as you see, I’m not restricted to my mother tongue) textbook on 2.7, but it is still quite expensive. So I would like to ask you whether my old 2.6 textbook still can be of use to me (and, more practical, how do I select an item in 2.7?)… and are there comprehensive (English) introductions to Blender 2.7, online or printed, you would like to recommend for a beginner like me?

Basic selections haven’t changed. There are more options now but the old ones didn’t change.

Either there is a problem with hardware/setup/settings, you messed up the inputs, or the textbook is crap.

Hi(gh)!

I’m obviously not able to select anything by clicking the right mouse key… with 2.6, this was no problem!

Hmmm… or I’m confused by the fact that selected edges (contrary to vertices) are no longer orange (like in older versions) but white…

Not much information to work with there. One issue people have had is the selection method in user preferences -> system, automatic method selecting one of them that then doesn’t work with their hardware that well. Setting it manually to be one of the two has worked.
