Show Wireframe Subsurface result in Edit Mode

I’m diving back into the Corvette car Creation ( here Corvette Stingray ) and I can’t for the life of me remember how to be able to see the result of the subsurf in wireframe whilst in edit mode:

Screenshot from the course:

There are some options in the modifier… especially enable in edit mode:

Tried all of those - that one just subdivides the mesh lines that you see in edit mode. In the screenshot above you can see the original mesh being edited (In orange and black) with the result of the subdivision visible underneath

Ups… yes totally overlooked this… hmmm  … edges are visible but not the wireframe… (slo in any see-through-mode) playing with wireframe settings now… but no…

Is this what you are after?

I use the wireframe overlay as well as turn off Optimal Display…

This is in edit mode…

I thought that was it, then, but no:

Now that is a puzzle… Just turning on the wireframe in the overlays and turning off optimal display as well as turning off the on cage icon…pops wire frame into view…

What version of Blender?
The one I showed is 3.3…

Because of the Viewer Node in the Overlay settings it is 3.4… and yes… it displays differently…

Ok now I think I know what you are after, yes things have changed!
This one is really freaky, It shows both wire frame distortion and actual vert position, I never saw that before (maybe never noticed). Blender 3.5
I like this view, I will probably use it a lot.

I have not found how to show distortion only (with all the subdivided edges) in edit mode.

How did you get it to work?

Interestingly, the screenshot in the original post is from 2.79…

I think it is the same as RSEhlers example now I look at it.
Just turn off optimal display and use wireframe overlay.

Yes I probably never noticed you could do it, I do not use wireframe overlay much.
Toggling on cage (in the subsurf modifier) gets rid of the extra wire-frame and real vertex position.

Yeah…I just checked in 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5 and they all work the same…
I’m sure it used to be just turning off the optimal display at one time… but I could very well be wrong…

Note: I can’t even imaging modeling the Corvette in 2.79… Superb Job BTW!

Of course, back then I had Satellite Internet and couldn’t even watch Youtube videos as it would delete my 300MB allowance per 24hrs really fast. Downloads some games only after 2 am and then only got less than a gig… a typical game took 2 weeks… I’m rambling…sorry about that!

I just checked 2.79 and it only seemed to work in wire-frame mode (with optimal display off), there was no wire-frame overlay for solid mode (or I could not find it).

I enjoy a good ramble!

I’m confused - pretty sure I’ve got everything set…

subsurf_display.blend (861.1 KB)

Yea, not sure what’s up but it doesn’t work either on my end.

Ummmmmmm you have.

I just opened your file as it was:

I am on 3.5 Alpha. (Linux build)
Maybe it is your blender version. Sometimes builds have errors that get corrected.

Hmmmmm both of you?

Ahhhhhhhhh looks like a cockroach (I dare not say the word!)

Using 3.4.1 here yea I think it’s a regression

At least it looks like the devs spotted it and have corrected. :slightly_smiling_face:

Ah yeah? Where’d you see that?

I knew I wasn’t going crazy/an idiot!

(Well, at least not becasue of this…)
