Showing a mterial of one object inside another

Imagine I have a sphere with a bright red material. Now imagine I place this sphere in a cube that has a transparent material. When I render, I can see the shape of the sphere but it is 100% black. I had hoped it would have rendered with the sphere’s applied color. I am very much a newbie here and I truly apologize if this is a silly question.

I’m going to guess you used the default lamp, which has ray traced shadow.

Either turn off ray shadow in the lamp settings.

OR

in the material settings of the red sphere, enable ‘Receive Transparent’ under the Shadow tab.

there seems to be a problem with the forum. replies are not getting registered. note, this thread is marked as having no replies, even though sago has replied to it.

Wow … Sago. Awesome post. The “Receive Transparent” under the Shadow tab was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you my friend.
