sideways menus to upright

i opened some of my old blend files and the menus - properties etc are all sideways.
where in preferences do i change them to upright?

If they were made in a blender version such as 2.49 with horizontal settings then when you open the file disable the 'Load UI" option so it uses your current UI settings. There is a setting in User Preferences to turn this option on/off by default
