Siggraph challenge

Hi Elysiun friends!

Long time no see.
Although there’s still no real official new Blender out, in the background there’s a lot of activity by coders who all feel more and more comfortable with the code. We just have to give them time, and for me there’s a lot of organisation work to do anyway.

So that’s where the Siggraph topic comes up. It’s still over 6 months away in the future, but to become part of the official schedule you have to apply projects or submissions early.
At the frontpage of www.blender.org you can read an article about the plans. Especially interesting for you guys is this:

Animation festival

If you get your (Blender) work accepted, I’ll do my very best to arrange some sponsoring for your plane ticket and admission fee!

Cya,

-Ton-

interesting challenge…
they say on the siggraph page that admissions shorter then 3 minutes have a bigger chance to get admitted. 3 minutes…march 12 deadline…nahhhhhhh

Roel

ps. too bad they don’t accept stills, o well, I guess I have to save up.

exodus movie…maybe year after next…YAHOOO!!!

I’m working on something right now. need not be overlong- but I wasn’t planning to be done by march twelfth (or july 26th)
infact, I was hoping to have a trailer ready for july 26th, potentially to show at the blender booth.
I’ll have a little think tonight on feasability. I’ve got 80% of modelling, 80% of texturing, want to refine hand setups and have yet to do facial blendshapes on two characters. needless to say I’ve got about 1% of actual animation done.
Aah. I’m talking to myself. I’ll post later with a ‘plan’ or at least a proposal for one (I may ask for help)
I’ll also post some shots of recent texture tests, so everyone can yay or nay on the quality.
In either case, I’ll see you at siggraph, with some animation made with blender.
maybe garbager can enter OOM? he might be done with it, and it might not interfere with the exclusive on his/her contest submission.

blargh! With the production speed of my current project, I might possibly make it around march 12! But that would be 2004… I really need to cut down on sleep from now on.

I just though of something. since it seems there are (at least) two of us slowcoaches out there with something maybe squeezable in for the 12th, maybe we can establish a community pool of people willing to donate cpu time for those close to deadline renders. I admit I haven’t worked out what the bandwidth requirements are to make this feasable, but Its a thought I thought I’d share. I’ll be quiet now.

heres a dump of some test renders- sorry about the quality and filenames:
early texture test of wall with struts, wall already reworked since then:

some old test anims:
http://home.attbi.com/~kurdali/stairsound.avi (turn down the sound- it was done just as a software test)
http://home.attbi.com/~kurdali/test.avi an early deformation test.
the texturing is not complete on most of it, and the lighting for the final has not been done. furthermore, I’ve been doing this mostly on my very bright screened laptop, so it may appear close to black on other monitors ( I plan on fixing that) but I’m not posting this stuff just to be annoying ; if I’m going to put in the (insane, impossible) work to finish by march 12, I need some opinions (I know, its too early) is this, or could this become, siggraph animation theatre material?

It’s a great idea, although it’s a way big enterprise. Even though the films are in a short format (3-5 minutes long), for small 3D enthusiasts (like me for example) it could be a difficult task, for the quality of those clips are really high in overall terms.

My suggestion is to make a multi-disciplined & organized work team to release a one short film, specially considering the short deadline, the high knowledge base of the community, and the importance to do something that really hits on the Animation Festival, a Blender short movie on the Electronic Theater is a dream I have since Siggraph 2000.

We can use a special section on some Forum to work on dedicated tasks (Idea, Sketches, Technical Issues, Sound, Anim, Compositing, Rendering, Assembling, etc.) on a scheduled basis, and then release it as a Blender-Users Community Production, which surely will give more added value to the work. It is rare to see one of those movies done by a single person, for big companies know the importance of being accepted on that scene.

I also suggest that, even though the Web3D RoundUp is down, there should be another kind of forums for a great interactive WebBlender application, and it’s also a more easy to accomplish task. And why not both of them?

I’d be glad to participate in this iniciative, even despite I’ve not too much peace of mind, for all the problems we are passing through here in Venezuela.

But if some one of you have already began a worthly clip, don’t hesitate to try & submit it, who knows?

hey, this sounds great…
too bad i can never finish something i’ve started :-?
hmm… actually i made this short movie called just one wish
[but i dont think it would have a chance]
:frowning:
good luck for all the other blender submissions…

For those who don’t know Siggraph well: there are two opportunities,

  • Electronic Theatre
Here the best-of is shown, with lots of movie stuff. It’s in a big hall, and usually a 90 minute show that only runs 2 times a day. Admission to the Electronic Theatre is very expensive, not part of the low-cost entrance ticket.

  • Animation Theatres
Multiple large rooms have a continuous viewing of animation work. People can just walk in and out, admission is part of the low-cost ticket. What I’ve seen there is nothing you should be intimidated by. It usually gives a nice overview of what happens by students, companies, etc.

Go for it! Even when it’s 30 seconds…

lets do it!yeah…i always like the idea of working together…especially if your work is seen in somewhere like siggraph.

what’s all this “short deadline” crap?

nine weeks for less than three minutes of animation? EASY!
well, if you have a degree in animation it is.
i wonder who here has one of those…

ok, getting slightly boastful and over-confident now  though i did just start work on a 90 second short for a competition with a feb 28th deadline, so if i get that done then i’ll be sending it to sig as well.

note to self -> must remember to deflate ego.

BEAT

That’d be way cool, me going to Siggraph or however you spell it (note: I’m a spelling freak on words that are in dictionaries, not abbreviations or anything like Siggraph might be). But I’m not sure if I could get any kind of short done, especially with my problems with people (I’d probably do the film as silent as a Buster Keaton film, except there’s subtitles).

Then again, what a way to get started on my d*mned (don’t like swearing, sorry) AP1538 project I’ve had in my head for over a year. Maybe I’ll start… better try… %| (I’m not sure if anybody wants to see the episode “The Amnesiac,” which has kind of a twist ending that might be visible pretty soon once you’ve learned the basic plot. Hmmm… must go back over my episode list and try to figure out which would make a good pilot. And yes, I know, “start it already!”)

wow, i must say, i really liked “just on wish” i had never seen itbefore…

very beuatiful animation, and quite a good ending :stuck_out_tongue:

is that all blender?

wait , of cours eit is… like the landscape at the beginning

I can’t wait until Siggraph 2003 in my home town of San Diego. I will definitely be there. I would like to help anyway that I can. See you all there.

Why havent we seen this before??? I thought it rocked!!! And i definatly LOVED the ending!!! hehe

You should send this in, its really quite good, then next year (or whenever you get it done) send 'em your journy to the center of the earth movie!!!

Matt

Blend on, and blend well!!!

I just fedex’d my blender movie “The Last Outpost” to Digital Domain for the festival… I hope its accepted… I cut it down to a half hour, I hope it’s enough…

It would be the perfect excuse to waste money on the trip…

Oh well… if they say my work is crap… at least I can say I made a piece of crap that made the professionals wince…

Jason !!!

Cool :o !

long time no seen…I have missed you…where can we/I see this movie  ?

oh. sorry, i havent seen your post before.
and sorry #2: the journey to the center of earth project was stopped.

Myself and a couple friends have been working on an Animated short for the past year or two… We will possibly have some animation tests and 3D renderings of some of the characters in the coming month. Its too late for us to submit anything proper for the festival this year. We will hopefully be finished by fall. But next year for sure we will be submitting it to Siggraph 2004. Check it out soon at http://www.fwd-rev.com We will soon have more than the story boards online. Some of the test animations and renderings could possibly be used at the booth or in some of the side discussion panels.
