I want to make this tube with holes in it, but don’t know how to go about this.
I made the cylinder and put spheres where I want the holes to be cut.
I figured I could use the booleon modifier to cut these away (and no mesh of the spheres remains), but realized that it wants to keep part of the mesh of the spheres. it keeps the mesh that is inside of the cylinder…
The modifier is “boolean”, it won’t work as expected if the normals aren’t consistent or there are mesh errors, and you should always seek for other solutions other than boolean with polygonal modeling. It works for special cases such as cutting/combining a high density geometry for 3D printing where the model structure might not be as important as it usually is, or when cleaning after boolean result could be faster than building something from ground up.
Also don’t spend time cutting and pasting cropped shots in an image. If you need to take a screenshot, organize Blender views so that you show as much information as needed and take a shot of the whole window (ctrl+F3). That way you include version number, view settings and any other potential causes of the problem (such as modifiers). Finally attaching a .blend file in the post gives information that you didn’t think of giving in the shot when actually troubleshooting. See the tutorial linked in my signature.
Here’s a quick video showing one way of putting holes on a cylinder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAJjzZQ807M
thank you, i will do that in the future.
It looks like that person used a plugin “loopTools” which helped him make circles he could cut out of mesh.
i am new to blender and am not sure if adding a plug in would make the software more confusing for me.
It won’t. It even comes with Blender. Could try to sphere function (alt+shift+S, 1, enter) but that doesn’t always work as well as looptools circle.
cool. yeah i researched how add-ons work last night and it shouldnt be confusing.
thanks for your help!
those looptools will be the best way to remove those circles
