Simple cube placement with hair particles

Hello,

Just trying out 2.77a. I have a simple scene with a cube. It is distributed with the hair particle system. The origin of the cube is at 0,0,0 on the bottom face of the cube. But all of the cubes are distributed on the plane at the mid line of the cube instead of the bottom face of the cube being placed on the plane. Scale, location and rotation are all applied. What could I be missing?
