Simpler and direct way to create “flat ribbons” from curves?

Hi guys.

A very “silly” and simple Blender doubt:

If I have a Curve and I want to convert it into a flat ribbon, it is necessary to use an external path, a simple straight segment, as an “Object” inside the Bevel of the curve, right?

I mean: there is no DIRECT way to get that flat ribbon without resorting to a second external profile, OK?

Unlike if we want to make it have a circular profile or almost any other type, where we can use the “Round” or “Profile” options. But unfortunately, in this second option (“Profile”) I don’t see a way to make it a flat profile.

Or is there an alternative and more direct way that I’m not aware? (without using an external second straight segment for section, I mean)

Or maybe some simple add-on?

THANKS!!!

Hi,
you can do that with Geometry Nodes using a Curve to Mesh node and a simple Curve Line as the profile.

Thanks!. Yes, I had also thought about the alternative of using Geometry Nodes. I just wanted to be sure that I am not overlooking some completely direct method inside curves (without “intermediaries”) A direct method such as being able to use a circular section or (almost) any other type of profile inside any curve settings, which are great things that surprised positively to me, coming from Modo and Cinema4D.

It’s a so common feature and “simpler” than circular or more complex profiles, that I find something strange that there is not something available “out of the box”

Of course, not a real problem, at all!. Lot of workarounds are available, but I preferred to ask! :slightly_smiling_face:

you can try this 2 ways

flat_ribbons.blend (103.6 KB)

Thanks, but when I say “flat” I mean completely flat, without thickness, without vertical Z dimension…

Don’t worry. I see that I was not ignoring something obvious here… Just wanted to be sure.

Of course there are LOTS of ways. I will likely build my own tool for this with GN.

Thanks!

Just delete the solidfy modifer and it is totaly flat in the first example.

Oh, YES!!! You are right!

To be honest: on my first answer I didn’t check the file (just looking your images)

But once I downloaded your example, no matter I created a new spline I didn’t found where you achieved that effect, since my ribbons appeared vertical, not flat in the floor.

Until I understood! The key is the MEAN TILT 90º

Yeah, a great trick! Thanks!
