single object selction

Hi, I’m new on blender and I am using Youtube videos to learn.

I am now constructing a human figure. After the main body was built, I started creating the hands, the idea would be to design a finger, duplicate it, and then connect them trough a hand to the arm of the main body.

Though in order to duplicate the finger it should be first selected. The problem is that every time I try to select it, both the finger and the main body get selected. I’ve tried a lot of ways and my ‘a’ key is fuming…

can anybody enlighten me?
Thank you very much!

The problem is that every time I try to select it, both the finger and the main body get selected.
That’s because they are all one object.
At the top of the interface you can see “Objects: 1/1” which means you have selected 1 of 1 object.

Don’t assume that if pieces of mesh are disconnected that they are different objects

You can separate part of the mesh to create a new object by selecting the mesh (in edit mode) and pressing P. Note that this new object will inherit the original objects properties (origin location, modifiers etc)
