The only thing that I might offer here is: “the eye is naturally drawn to the brightest and the most-contrasty elements of the frame.” Unfortunately, these areas are, first, an “autumn-leaves tree above” your intended ‘subject,’ and then “a mess of shiny green leaves below it.”

And then, within the subject area: "What do you want me to focus-on first? The drum? The cup? The staff? His beard?"

The human eye expects to be led instantly to a particular point-of-focus, then to be led through the scene in a circular path which winds up where it began.
