Sketched Christmas Story

Here’s a video I put together in light of the holiday season. I may make a few more changes on this but as the shelf life is rather limited I thought I’d toss it up here for people to take a look at before Christmas is over.

Youtube seems to have screwed with the quality a little. The edges are more pixelated than they really are so if you wanna see it in it’s full glory take a look at the link.

Higher Quality: http://www.photogenesisdesigns.com/artwork/Hallelujah_Final.mp4

Anyway, hope you like it, I’d love to hear your comments.

hey… this is a great piece of work cmonson!!!
I really like the calm feeling that this video gives me! I like that Version of the music. And due to the no animations of the characters, the very moment is much better in the focus!!! Great work!
It would be great if maria and joseph would rest in cot and not a cave.

Thanks for sharing this.

Andreas

Thanks ndee  I was trying hard to make the whole piece just kinda pull you in in a smooth relaxing sort of way. There are a few things I’d like to change still, particularly in the final scene, we’ll see if I have time today to do it.

Btw, ndee, your Flick character and rig are phenomenal, I’m gonna have to dissect that rig over my vacation after Christmas.

Amazing job. I really love the style! It’s great as is, but if you wanted to give it a little something extra, some slow drift on your characters would definitely add it. Nothing big, just something like the shepard at teh beginning looking up super slow. Anyway, just a thought. Loved it as is, though as stated, it would be nice if it ended in a stable instead of a cave.

Yeah, I had thought about the slow drift on the characters, and although I like the feel of it I just don’t think I have the time to be able to carry it out as this project has to be completely finished by tomorrow. As for the cave instead of the stable… well, I was trying to be accurate. Christmas tradition normally shows it as a stable, in reality most historians would say it was probably a cave, however that may be a point I want to drop. I’d rather have it not be confusing than have it be accurate. I’ll see what I can do.

Chris

try submitting it to blendernation, since it’s christmastime they’ll probably approve of it, very well done work btw

Very very cool, love the 2.5D feel of it. I could really see this in a children’s iPad christmass app

Alright, I changed the last scene, ditched the cave, went with the stable, and uploaded an HD version of the video, let me know what you think. (Links were updated in the initial post).

i think…YOU SHOULD SUBMIT IT TO BLENDERNATION

I’m geussing that you used eint but how did you have the lines draw out like that?

its really good. love the music.

just a question, how’d you get that sort of sketched look for shading on the objects? were they modeled in 3d and is it some kind of node thing?

thanks

@GraphiX: The basic look was achieved through blender’s post processing edge function, and then the draw on effect was done using several traveling masks.

@pop850: Everything in the animation is modeled in 3d, they are all 3d objects in a 3d scene. I have edges turned on in the post processing settings so I get black edges on all objects. I’m also using a single white shadeless material and a white background so when I render I am getting black lines on a white background. This is then composited onto the parchment background. to create the final look.

I thoroughly enjoyed this CMonson, nice work indeed!

great use of the simple but still effective edge function!

Dude, that was awesome! Merry Christmas! Christ is born!

YEAH u made it to blendernation  http://www.blendernation.com/2010/12/25/sketched-christmas-story/

I very rarely impressed. But this goes to my collection. Next time I make promotion of Blender, I’ll show this animation for sure, and mention Your name

So simple, but so complete… perfect.
