Skin Modifier too many loops

I love the skin modifier, it is such a great way to make tubes, trees, birdcages, you name it…

The only thing wrong, is that the geometry it creates has far too many edge loops, even on a straight line.

Is there any way to control this? What’s the point of a time saving modifier when you have to spend an hour cleaning up the mesh by hand after using it?
