Hi,
I have made some editable mesh objects with a skin modifier and bone animation frames in 3ds max. Now I want to use Blender to continue my work on them but I can’t find a way to move the models from .max format to .blender format. I know there is no importer for max. Does anybody know a suitable file format which can be exportet by 3ds max 7 and importet to Blender?
They are models for my game engine which uses Doom 3 's md5 format. I can export md5 from max and import it in Blender but the importer doesn’t work very well. It produces a very crappy skeleton. All the bones are of the same length and face the wrong direction. Bones which do not affect the mesh are not exported to md5 so I have an incomplete skeleton.
You might be out of luck. It’s difficult to get more than just geometry to import/export to/from any application. I use max all the time at work, but for arch-viz. I’ve never worked with bones/skinning. Good luck…search for some scripts at scriptspot.com and see if there are any exporters from max.
Collada may help you scratch that itch. You may have to make sure you have similar versions of the .dae exporter on both apps.
