Skinning this clothing mesh

Hello,
Is there any ‘rig master’ here, who can help me in ‘skinning’ this clothing mesh?
I follow Toshicg course “Rig anything with rigify” so I know the basics, but is there anyone who could lead me in case I couldn’t figure out something?

thanks in advance

Usually I don’t use rigify because it has lots of baggage.

I would rather start with a very simple armature, and eventually if is really needed, I would use a the riggify as a “driver” to use only the IK capabilities.

You can start with automatic weights because it gives you the naming vertex groups right, but after usually the result estimated is 90% useless. So you end up going in edit mode, select all vertices of a vertex group, and remove them from that vertex group. You select the right vertices, assignment to the group, and then smudge the weights a bit to get the smoothing.

In order to have better results you will need to do the smudge while the character is in a pose. Otherwise if you smudge while in a TPose you won’t have any idea about if the result is right.

Thanks a lot !!! I will follow your tips for sure. I’m a rigging beginner but as far as I see it is possible to do, that’s already good news  I will let know how things go. Regards

And here is how to set up those convenient inverse kinematics with basic bones, straight and basic to the point:

Well, seems like I missed this thread when it first appeared.

Because topics get historical in the forum, maybe it’s still not too late to add this tutorial reference. It’s a very similar case to yours I believe; if I’m not wrong, TomCAT also started this project using Rigify.

Although a quite long video, it is a really good tutorial; one of the best currently on the subject I believe (it’s also relatively specific, which in some sense, adds a lot of value); because there is so much excellent Weight Painting artwork involved and precise explanations of the different methods employed on the creative process; from start to finish.

If you’re still on this Cloth Rigging project and need feedback/help; bring your questions and progress on it; I’ll certainly be around the corner.
