Skinning

I’m new to Blender, is there a way to find out what bones are weighted to a single vertex? Does Blender display a list of just the bones weighted to the vertex?

Hi there!

Bring up the N-panel (little arrow to the right of 3D Viewport). In “Item” tab there will be a list of related vertex groups with weight values.

Hello StrayBillie, may I ask another question? There appears to be weights on bones that add up to a value greater than “1”.

I would assume a vertex could not be weighted to more than a value of “1” no matter how many bones are weighted to a vertex.

I’m new to Blender. Is this normal? Would I just need to play around with the values until it looks correct?

Yeah, I heard it’s good practice to keep things normalized. There are operators for this both in Edit and Weight Paint modes.
In Weight Paint you can also set brush to Auto-Normalize, to adjust weights while you’re painting.

Thank you for showing me the "Normalaize " button. But when I press the button, nothing seems to happen to the vertex. And the weights in the list do not change. For precise weight adjustments on particular verts, is there a mode I need to be in for the Normalize button to work and adjust the bones weight values between a value of “1”?

I moved the character away from 0,0,0 then selected the offending verts left behind.
The Normalize panel in the “Item” sidebar seems to vanished.

I’d love to help, but I don’t know much about these functions enough myself (right in the middle of skinning my own model )

I don’t think you can adjust weights while simultaneously normalizing in Edit Mode (maybe there’s an addon for that). Probably can’t.
In Paint mode it’s easier but less precise (you can use tiny brush with low strength and Auto-normalize checked).

:person_shrugging: :person_shrugging: :person_shrugging: …sorry.

Thank you for all your help. You have helped me learn more about Blender. Now I can ask a better question in the forum thanks to the new knowledge you have given me.

Thank you,

Hello a blender rigger here, you can’t have more than 1 of weight on any vertex group weights (so minimum is 0 to maximum 1.0) if a bone or several bones have 1.0 of weight in a single vertex is fine, but it won’t weight it as 1.0 in every bone, so for example let’s say you have 4 bones and 1 vertex assigned for them at 1.0, the resulting weight (automated by blender) would be 0.25 per bone, so bear that in mind…

And normalize all is buggy and doesn’t have a control over what to normalize less or more, so use the individual normalize command instead, also same for the auto normalize tool preferably don’t use it…
