Slicing a scene?

Hi folks.

I have a problem which is giving me a bit of a headache, I’ve been trying to work out ways to do what’s required, but I’m failing with every approach, then wondered if Blender might come to the rescue. (Fingers crossed)

The problem is quite complicated, but can be simplified thus:
I have a thin spinning glass sphere with surface geometry so rotation is obvious.

I need to render an animation of this spinning item in two parts, the front and the back, as if the sphere has been sliced in half. So render 1 is the outside of the front of the sphere, render 2 is the inside of the back half. Reason being, in a game I can place a sprite in between the layers.

I can do what I wan’t with the view clipping settings, but these are ignored in a render.

Any ideas?

I think the camera has it’s own clipping settings.

Edit: yeah, in the camera properties there’s a separate set of clipping settings.
